The ILEETA Legal Update is a continuing program that explores current case law, constitutional issues, and emerging legal challenges affecting policing.
Purpose
The update is designed as an instructor development resource, not to hand trainers pre-packaged material, but to sharpen their own understanding of the law. The goal is to help ILEETA members deepen their legal knowledge, strengthen their confidence in the classroom, and model lawful, professional policing practices.
Why we’re doing it
To support ILEETA’s mission to inspire excellence in law enforcement training.
To equip members with up-to-date legal knowledge relevant to use of force, search and seizure, detention, and other constitutional concerns.
To build a growing library of legal content relevant to law enforcement trainers and educators that highlights common themes across the U.S. Constitution and landmark cases, while also opening space to compare how the rule of law and use of force are governed worldwide.
Scope
While the program focuses on overarching U.S. constitutional principles, the conversations are relevant to officers and instructors internationally. Landmark cases and common legal themes will be explored with an eye toward how trainers can better prepare officers for the complex realities of modern policing.
