Safe response to Clandestine Drug Labs

EDGARTOWN, MA – In the past decade, the problem of clandestine drug labs has skyrocketed as the methampetamine phenomenon spreads from rural locations to cities, and from western states eastward. As the number of illicit drug operations expands, so do the hazards to communities and to emergency personnel, who are likely to discover a lab during a routine response. Emergency Film Group of Edgartown, MA has produced “Response to Illicit Drug Labs,” a training program for law enforcement, firefighters, hazmat teams, environmental response personnel and others who may be involved in a raid at an illegal lab, or who may unexpectedly discover one.

“Response to Illicit Drug Labs” portrays the methods cookers use to manufacture meth, which is the drug most commonly manufactured illegally. The program studies the hazards found at active labs, boxed (inactive) labs and dump sites – including weapons and booby traps – and also tells how to identify potential clandestine drug operations. The program comes with a second feature, titled “HazMat for Meth Labs,” that examines the hazardous properties of chemicals commonly found at a lab site. Other topics covered by the program include respiratory protection and protective clothing for responders; decontamination; how meth abuse affects the body; dealing with waste disposal; and lab site clean-up.

The package also includes a time-saving 120-slide Power Point presentation that can be customized by the Instructor and used as the basis of a training seminar.

Technical advisors for “Response to Illicit Drug Labs” include Jay T. Barton, a 17-year veteran of Oklahoma law enforcement who is Clandestine Laboratory and Site Safety Officer Certified; James Creighton, retired Director of the Illinois State Police Meth Lab Metro Enforcement Group of Southwest Illinois; Steve Hergenreter of Fort Dodge (IA) Fire & Rescue, a Master Instructor for the International Association of Fire Fighters WMD/Hazmat Training Department; John Meyers, a retired chemist with US Drug Enforcement Agency who participated in the seizure of over 75 laboratories; and August Vernon, Assistant Coordinator for the Forsyth County (NC) Office of Emergency Management. It was filmed on location in Missouri and Illinois with the help of municipal, county, and state response organizations.

Emergency Film Group uses leading professionals in emergency response and film production to create authoritative and accurate training programs for fire departments, hazmat teams, emergency management, police, EMS, the military and other emergency responders.  Winner of more than 130 awards in national and international competitions, the company provides training on such timely topics as incident management, terrorism response, homeland security, hazardous materials, protective clothing, and air monitoring for its more than 12,000 customers.

The Power of the MagnumSpike!

As told by Investigator Greg Cox, Sequoyah County Sheriffs Department

“On this date of Feb. 1, 2010, a high speed pursuit was led into Sequoyah Co. from Sebastian Co. with Deputies from Sebastian Co., Arkansas, and other area officers pursuing behind the suspect vehicle. One of the suspects in the vehicle was an escapee from a Correction Center who had assisted in the assault of a Detention Officer during escape. The Officer later deceased from injuries directly caused from his assailant’s attack.

“The subjects had run at least two different road blocks where they were attempted to be stopped. They approached the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department road block that I was assisting in where I had deployed the MagnumSpike! system. A direct contact was made by the new model Ford F150 truck and shortly after the tires were deflated and shredding from the spikes direct puncture into the tires. Without this product the lives of numerous persons would have been in great danger due to coming into a highly populated residential/business district of the Town of Sallisaw, Oklahoma.”

The MagnumSpike! is the only TDD to hold the US Department of Homeland Security Certificate of Conformance as an approved product for Homeland Security under the Safety Act of 2002.

Failure is not an option with the MagnumSpike!  Law Enforcement departments interested in this 100% safe and effective TDD can take advantage of a special offer of the new MS16 model available in a compact, lightweight case for just $295.00 while supplies last.

Response to Active Shooter training program is ‘comprehensive, well-done, accurate’

EDGARTOWN, MA – In an active shooter incident such as Columbine or Fort Hood, normal safety protocols may be suspended as police officers and other first responders quickly act without waiting for support teams to arrive. Emergency Film Group of Edgartown, MA has produced “Active Shooter: Rapid Response” a DVD-based training resource and reference designed for law enforcement, firefighters, EMTs, and and others who may be first on the scene of a mass shooting. In the ILEETA Review, a publication of the International Law Enforcement Educators & Training Association, this program was described as “a comprehensive, well-done, accurate training aid that is neither frivolously violent, nor boring.”

Combining realistic training exercises that simulate mass shootings with footage of actual incidents, “Active Shooter: Rapid Response” portrays  actions for the first arriving officer; two and four man teams, perimeter control, proper use of safety equipment, strategies and tactics, including use of deadly force, managing victims, the role of support teams, and terminating the incident. There is also a segment portraying the ‘lone officer scenario.’ Included in the package are a 34-minute DVD with a bonus feature on approach, entry and search tactics and a Resource CD-Rom with PowerPoint, testing, and other materials that an instructor can use or modify as the basis of a customized training seminar.

Technical advisors for “Active Shooter: Rapid Response” include Frank Borelli, a former police officer and currently the Editor-in-Chief of Officer.com, a website dedicated to supporting police officers; Phillip Currance,  a member of the US Public Health Service who serves as the Deputy Commander of the Central US National Medical Response Team for WMD; Rick Hetzel, Assistant Special Agent in Charge and the State Assistant Team Commander with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Special Response Team; Mike Hildebrand, Senior Partner and operations security consultant with Hildebrand & Noll Associates; Chris Mailliard, a Tactical Medic with over 15 years in emergency response;  August Vernon of the Forsyth County (NC) Office of Emergency Management; and  Trent Walker, Critical Incident Planning Officer for the Greensboro Police Department (NC). Filming was done on location in Massachusetts with the help of law enforcement and other response organizations.

Emergency Film Group uses leading professionals in emergency response and film production to create authoritative and accurate training programs for police and other emergency responders.  Winner of more than 140 awards in national and international competitions, the company addresses such timely topics as incident management, terrorism response, homeland security, and hazardous materials response.
